I was wrong.

Today was not a better day. We've just come from the vet's office where we had to make that most awful of decisions regarding Annie, the family's yellow Lab.

My dad called to tell me that Rufus, our hound, had a small wound in his side that might need attention. Himself and I loaded into the car and headed for my folks'. On the way, Dad called again to tell me that he would come with us because he'd just found Annie, and she needed emergency treatment.

Rufus is fine, didn't even need a suture. Annie wasn't so lucky. Whatever got the two of them inflicted such severe injuries that any treatment was beyond our means and abilities.

Annie was part of our family for all eighteen months of her life, and will be remembered as a wonderful representative of her breed: smart, loving, and anxious to please.

Oh my gosh, I'm so very, very sorry for your loss... and such a young, vibrant pup. Were they outdoor dogs and something got in to their fenced area? Poor babies!
So sorry...

So sorry to hear about Annie =/ I can imagine how bad everyone must feel - as dogs are just as much a part of your family as any human. She was lucky to be part of such a great family!

I'm so sorry to hear about Annie. They take a piece of our heart when they leave us at any age, but 18 months---that is just much too young. [[[Hugs]]]

Thank you all for your kind thoughts. We cased the yard and property boundaries; judging from the assorted tracks we found, the local pack of strays decided to show their strength. I used this rotten situation to write a column for the paper regarding the consequences of abandoning pets. Hopefully this kind of thing will eventually stop.
